Five new topics for your internship

During the vacations, one can utilize their leisure time doing a research project. Incumbent can contact an expert and decide on which topic she/he can pursue the project. The end result can be manifold which includes but not limited to: a publication in a journal/conference; a patent; an innovative idea for doing business or a monograph which highlights the journey from the idea in the paper to the lab and ultimately in use for the benefit of mankind.

Following ideas are developed, keeping in mind that such leisure time is small and limited. The proposed designs can be accomplished within a short time and if one can devote around 4 to 5 hours. The reward will depend on the sincerity and seriousness of the researcher.

The selected five ideas are entirely new and have never been tried before. An acknowledgement in the articles that one can publish after successful completion of the projects will be enough for the author of this blog.

Title :
Selection of Optimal Quality Water for Specific Uses by ANN-MCDM based Auto-Selector.

Pre-requisite :
Knowledge of photo-sensors, Artificial Neural Network, Multi-Criteria Decision Making.

Justification of the Study :
The change in the climate pattern, pollution concentration in the air and water,ever-growing demand and lastly the uncontrolled extraction of natural resources has induced a situation where the amount of water demanded, available and usable has a detectable level of difference. That is why day by day water is becoming scarce, and consumers have to ensure proper measures for optimal utilization of the resource. An automatic selector which can seperate water based on its quality specific uses may help to control misuse of the resource.

Brief Methodology :
Relationship between water quality and its uses must be determined first. The MCDM techniques can be devised to decide about the quality of water for a specific purpose. After correlation is established, some sensors may be used to detect a few of the significant quality parameters of water: BOD, DO, TDS, TSS and pH. The weightage of the importance of each of the parameter can be estimated by MCDM with the help of experts, literature and consumers deciding intended use. A weight function can be prepared to determine the selectability of the water for specific use as inputted by the user.

Title
Short Term Rainfall forecasting by ANN-MCDM Approach

Pre-requisite :
Various data of climatic parameters, land use pattern of the region, cloud type and density for 1 to 5 days before the day of forecast.

Justification of the Study :
Rainfall can impact the output of many industrial and agricultural processes. Even the energy output from the power sector is affected by the climatic parameter. Short term rainfall forecasting is an important concept as it can help the planners of this industry to adjust their input so that the required output will remain unaffected.

Brief Methodology :
A widescale expert and local survey followed by a literature review have to be conducted to identify the parameters which mostly impact the rainfall probability. After the most critical parameters are determined, MCDM methods like Analytical Hierarchy Process or Fuzzy Decision Making can be applied to determine the relative weightage of the importance of the selected parameters. A weight function can be then developed to estimate the probability of rainfall in the next day or day after tomorrow or within the next five days.

Title
Impact of Climate Change on Groundwater Level in Religious Places

Pre-requisite :
Hydro-meteorological, Future Climate and groundwater level Data, Knowledge about Predictive Groundwater Models.

Justification of the Study :
A significant characteristic of the religious place is uncontrolled extraction of groundwater. During climate change, when rainfall and temperature will either increase or decrease, the removal of groundwater can induce implication on the level of the same. As a result, the very extraction of groundwater will be painful.

Brief Methodology :
After collecting the relevant data, a model can be prepared to predict the level of groundwater of the religious place. Models like visual groundwater or an entirely new model can be developed by various metaheuristic methods.

Title
Impact of Climate Change on Virtual and Green Water Availability in Arid Regions

Pre-requisite :
Hydro-meteorological, Future Climate and Water Use Data, Knowledge about Predictive Hydrologic Models.

Justification of the Study :
Virtual water is the amount of water used in industries as raw material, and Green Water is the volume of water utilized in agriculture. The availability of both of them is essential for the socio-economic development of any region. As arid areas are characterized by water scarcity, such places will be more vulnerable to climate change impacts. As these two types of water use are vital for the GDP of any region, maintaining a minimum water volume for the said purposes will be necessary.

Brief Methodology :
After collecting the relevant data, a model can be prepared to predict the availability of water. Then based on the demand from the agriculture and industrial sector, the availability of Virtual and Green Water under climate change can be estimated. Models like HECHMS or an entirely new model can be developed by various metaheuristic methods can be used for the said purpose.

Title :
Real-Time Water Energy Conversion and Storage Unit

Pre-requisite :
Knowledge of hydropower, sensors, MCDM, GMDH

Justification of the Study:
In hydropower plants, the flow of water is converted to electricity. More substantial the head (or difference of water level at two different points) higher will be the flow. Higher the flow high will be the quantity of energy produced. But finding large heads is difficult. Also converting the large head into electricity is an expensive procedure. As a result, such energy conversion procedure is avoided. Now if some device can be created which can detect head and convert that head by changing location to that point, then a sufficient amount of energy potential from water can be utilized.

Brief Methodology
In this aspect, at first, a decision support system(DSS) is required to be developed which can use a logic constituted by the MCDM techniques and related factors of energy production from the water flow. Then GMDH can be used to create a predictive model which can estimate the decision. This decision will help the converter to move to the energy concentrated location from where the water head can be converted to electricity. An arrangement of the sensors will be required, which can collect the data for the input parameters of the DSS, and some servo motors will be needed to move the device towards the desired location. Then a gate in the invention can be opened to consume the head, and a dynamo fixed inside will convert it into energy. The incoming water will be purveyed after the conversion.
